what is data?
its information that we collect about the world
discrete data and continuos data
it cannot be broken down into fractions or decimals, can only take on integer values and it is typically things counted in whole numbers
continuos: can be broken down into fractions and decimals, is measured, can take on any value
qualitative data and quantitative data
qualitative: descriptions in words of whats being observed.They are based on some quality of an observation such as color,odor, or texture.
quantitative: numeric measurements the data are objective they are the same no matter who measures them. they include measurments such as mass, volume, temperature, distance, concentration, time or frequency
how do you collect data?
- create a survey question
- decide on a few choices
- survey a group of people, record your result with tally marks.
