Reversible reaction + Dynamic equilibrium Flashcards
What is a reversible reaction?
A chemical reaction in which the products can react to form the starting reactants
What symbol is used to show it’s a reversible reaction?
⇌
What three things can affect the direction of the reaction?
Concentration
Temperature
Pressure
What is equilibrium (aka dynamic equilibrium)?
When the forward and reverse reactions are happening at the same time and the same rate.
They occur in a closed system.
What’s a closed system?
No reactants are added and no products are removed.
Nothing can go in or out
What is Le Chatelier’s principle?
If a system in equilibrium is subjected to a change in conditions, then the system will shift to resist the change or minisime the effect of it.
When dealing with reversible reation question, what is the first step you should do?
1a - lable the arrows
1b - identify the change from the question
What is the second step in a reversible reaction question?
Describe the action that is the direct opposiite to the change in step 1b
What is the third step when dealing with a reversible reaction question?
From the equation, identify the direction of the arrow which achieves the action mentioned in step 2
What is the additional step required to get full marks on a reversible reaction question?
“The system will continue to shift until equilibrium is restored”
What else should you mention when the change is regarding pressure?
Mention which side (reactants or products) has more moles
More moles = High pressure side
Less moles = Low pressure side
