Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome Flashcards
Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome
Hypertensive syndrome associated with cerebral edema and symptoms of headaches, vomiting, confusion, seizures, cortical blindness
Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome
Acute rise in BP results in dilatation of cerebral arteries and arterioles and increase in blood brain barrier permeability leading to brain edema.
Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome
Underlying causes: immunosuppressive therapy, vasculitis (lupus), pregnancy (eclampsia), kidney failure, severe HTN
Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome
Diagnosis: magnetic resonant imaging revealing cortico–subcortical areas of hyperintensity involving the occipital and parietal lobes on T2-weighted images.
Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome
Management: BP control and treatment of underlying diseases
Condition may be reversible, but blindness may persist.
