Revelation, Scripture & Truth - Passages to Master Flashcards
- God Speaks Through Creation
Psalm 19:1-2 ESV
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
- Humans Rebel Against God’s Revelation
Romans 1:19-20 ESV
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
- God Spoke Through His Prophets . . . and Then Through His Son
Hebrews 1:1-2 ESV
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
- All Scripture is Inspired by God
2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
- Prophets Moved by the Spirit
2 Peter 1:20-21 ESV
knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
- Words Taught by the Spirit
1 Corinthians 2:13 ESV
And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
- God’s Word is True
John 17:17 ESV
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
- Birth of the Old Testament Canon
Deuteronomy 31:26 ESV
“Take this Book of the Law and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against you.
Joshua 1:8 ESV
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
- Rise of the New Testament Canon
2 Peter 3:15-16 ESV
And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,
as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
- Keeping the [Good] Traditions
2 Thessalonians 2:15 ESV
So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.
Two Old Testament Tests of a False Prophet
- Failed Prophecies: Deuteronomy 18:21-22 ESV
And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’—
when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him. - False Theology: Deuteronomy 13:1-3 ESV
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder,
and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’
you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
An Orthodox View of Inspiration:
We are in line with the church’s historic teaching when we affirm these three facts about the inspiration of Scripture
- God is the source
- The very words are the product
- The Holy Spirit is the agent
What Inerrancy does NOT mean:
- Does not demand adherence to the strict rules of grammar
- Does not exclude the use of either figures of speech or literary genre
- Does not demand historical or semantic precision
- Does not demand the technical or obeservational language of modern science
- Does not require verbal exactness in the citation of the Old Testament by the New
- Does not demand that the sayings of Jesus contain the exact words Jesus uttered but rather a faithful report of His meaning
- Does not guarantee the exhaustive comprehensiveness of any single account or of combined accounts where those are involved
- Does not demand the infallability of non-inspired sources used by biblical writers
What are the 3 kinds of Tradition?
- BAD - Doctrines or practices introduced by people that distract from or replace God’s revelation
- NEUTRAL - Practices introduced by people that effectively communicate God’s revelation in particular historical settings
- GOOD - Doctrines and practices revealed through God’s apostles and prophets that constitute God’s revelation
