Retrieval failure due to absence of cues Flashcards
Who conducted RTS context dependent forgetting?
Godden and Baddeley
What did G&B do?
They gave scuba divers a list of words to learn either on land or under water and then asked them to recall the list in the same setting or the opposite.
What did G&B find?
It was found that the participants were more lille to forget the words (40% less accuracy) if tested in the opposite location to where they learned the words - supporting CDF
Who conducted RTS state-dependent forgetting?
Goodwin et al
What did Goodwin do?
He had male volunteers learn a list of words either drunk or sober. They were then asked to recall the words 24 hours later in either the same or opposite state
What did Goodwin find?
Participants were likely to forget the words if tested in the opposite state to which they had learned the words - supporing SDF
What does Goodwin’s research lack?
Mundane realism
Why does Goodwin’s research lack mundane realism and what does it make it difficult to do?
It uses artificial tasks such as learning a list making it difficult to generalise the findings to everyday cases of forgetting as in real life we may be learning much more complex informations which may not be as easily accessed with an internal or external cue - reducing external val
What is a strength of the theory?
It has practical applications
What are the practical applications of this theory?
The idea that forgetting occurs due to a lack of memory cures has been used to create a technique by police in the cognitive interview known as context-reinstatement
What is context-reinstatement?
Witnesses are asked to imagines themselves at the scene of the crime and to imagine how they were feeling when recalling the events which has been found to be effective in triggering memories as they access internal and external memory cues
