Retreival And Interleaving Flashcards
More training pairs / more recall
Mashua - boat. is studying the best way of learning? results for many or one training pairs vs repeated or one retrieval, results were same on final test.
difficulty of retrieval
Student learned 70 Swahili-English word pairs. Difficulty of retrieval between 1-6 minute delay. 25 min later, more difficult studying performed better on test.
feedback
Conditions: no retrieval, test with no feedback, test with delayed feedback, test with immediate feedback. Test with immediate feedback performed significantly better
Transfer of learning
Conditions: restudy passages on echolocation, restudy sentences with key info, repeated test. Repeated testing scored higher on final test.
Retrieval vs concept mapping
Conditions: study, repeated study, concept mapping practice, retrieval practice on . Meta cognitive predictions for repeated study scored highest while retrieval study scored lowest. Retreated/ retrieval practice performed best on final test.
Geometry study
conditions: blocked (solid, grouped together) and interleaved (mixed up). Practice performance blocked scored higher, test performance interleaved scored higher.
Complex motor skill study
Conditions: bb, bi, ib, ii. Participants learnt complex motor skill involving rapid arm movements. Ps block studying x6 scored better on retention test 10 days later. Ps interleave studying scored worse during practice but best on retention test.
Why does interleaving work
FE = making up and studying a fake concept. DE = using a true formula but for the wrong concept. Same amount of FE between blocking and interleaving on test but more DE when block studying on test.
