Retinal Detachment Flashcards
What is Retinal detachment?
Retina separates from Choroid underneath
What happens in Retinal detachment? (2 steps)
- Retinal tear –> allows Vitreous fluid to get underneath retina
- VF fills space between Retina + Choroid
Why can a Retinal detachment be a Medical Emergency?
Outer retina relies on blood vessels of Choroid
What are the RF for Retinal detachment? (8 things)
- Age 40+
- Male
- FHx
- Trauma
- Previous eye surgery
- Retinal detachment in other eye
- DM Retinopathy
- Retinal malignancy
What are the CF of Retinal detachment? (3 things)
- Painless Progressive Peripheral loss of vision (like shadow moving across field of vision)
- Blurred / distorted vision
- Flashers and Floaters
What are Flashers and Floaters?
What investigation should you do for sus Retinal detachment?
Fundoscopy
What will you see on Fundoscopy in Retinal detachment?
What other investigations can you do for Retinal detachment?
US
What is the point of doing an US in Retinal detachment?
If there is Vitreous haemorrhage caused by Tear involving retinal vessel
What are some DDx that present similarly to Retinal detachment? (2 things)
- Retinoschisis (split within neurosensory layer)
- Choroidal mass (solid mass assoc w fluid)
How do you differentiate between Retinoschisis and Retinal detachment?
Retinoschisis: No corrugated appearance on fundoscopy
How do you differentiate between Choroidal mass and Retinal detachment?
Choroidal mass: No retinal pear / pigment in Vitreous
What are the Mx aims for Retinal TEARS?
Create adhesions between Retina + Choroid to prevent detachment
How can a Retinal Tear be Mx to prevent detachment? (2 things)
- Laser therapy
- Cryotherapy
