RETINA DISEASES Flashcards
HYPERTENSIVE RETINOPATHY
DAMAGE TO BLOOD VESSELS IN RETINA.
EXAMPLE:
*BLEEDING
*SWELLING (EDEMA)
*FLUFFY WHITE PATCHES ( COTTON WOOL SPOTS)
*BUILD UP OF PROTIENS AND LIPIDS (EXUDATES)
*CHANGES IN BLOOD VESSELS, SUCH AS THICKENING/NARROWING (ARTERIOSCLEROSIS), HARDENING (SCLEROSIS) ARTERY/VEIN CROSSING (AV NICKING)
*SWELLING OF THE OPTIC NERVE, BLURRED VISION
SOME CASES, BLOCKAGES (OCCLUSIONS), CUASES SERVERE VISION LOSS OR BLINDNESS
LATTICE DEGENERATION
THINNING OF THE OUTER EDGES OF THE PERIPHERAL
COMMON WITH:
*MYOPIC (NEAR-SIGHTEDNESS)
*FAMILY HISTORY OR PREVIOUS RETINAL TEAR OR DETACHMENT.
*BLOOD IN THE EYE
*SYSTEMIC RETINAL DISEASE
MACULAR HOLE
VITREOUS DEGENERATES AND CAN PULL AWAY FROM THE SURFACE OF RETINA, CAN GET STUCK AND CAUSES A HOLE.
SYMPTOMS:
*DECREASED, BLURRY OR DISTORTED VISION
*GREY OR BLIND SPOT IN CENTRAL VISION
*DIFFICULTY READING OR PERFORMING TASK THAT REQUIRE DETAILED VISION.
MACULAR TELANGIECTASIA (MAC-TEL)
CYSTIC CHANGES ON OCT MAC
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT)
LASER TREATMENT THAT TREATS ABNORMAL BLODD VESSELS
EXAMPLES:
*WET AMD
*CSC
*RETINAL TUMORS
RETINAL DETACHMENT
RETINA PULLS AWAY AND SEPERATES FROM BLOOD VESSELS
POSTERIOR VITREOUS DETACHMENT
WHEN VITREOUS GEL SEPERATES FROM THE RETINA
RHEGMATOGENOUS RETINAL DETACHMENT
WHEN YOU HAVE A TEAR OR BREAK, WHICH ALLOWS VITREOUS TO GET BEHIND RETINA AND DETACHES.
TRACTIONAL RETINAL DETACHMENT
IF SCAR TISSUE ON RETINA PULLS RETINA AWAY.
EXUDATIVE RETINAL DETACHMENT
FLUID BUILDS UP BEHIND RETINA AND DETCHES WITH OUT TEAR OR BREAK.
RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION (RVO)
SMALL VEINS IN RETINA BECOME BLOCKED.
BRANCH RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION (BRVO)
SMALLER BRANCH (PERIPHERAL) RETINAL VEINS BECOME BLOCKED
CENTRAL RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION (CRVO)
BLOCKAGE IN CENTRAL VEINS
HEMI RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION (HRVO)
AN ENTIRE HALF FO RETINA IS AFFECTED BY BLOCKED VEINS.
