Retention And Stability Flashcards
What is stability?
Quality of a denture to resist displacement from functionally directed forces. Quality of a denture to be firm, steady and not subject to change of position when forces are applied. Subjective assessment
What is retention?
Resistance of a denture to displacement from denture bearing areas in a vertical direction
Depends on acquired muscular control, physical forces of retention - adhesion and cohesion of saliva, peripheral border seal, area of DBA area, accuracy of fit
What is support?
Quality of a denture to resist displacement from occlusally directed forces. Determined by good bony support with well formed ridges.
What are displacing forces?
Muscles surrounding oral cavity
Tongue
Sticky and viscous foods
Occlusal interferences
What is the average upper DBA?
24 cm squared
What is the average lower DBA?
14cm squared
