Results of the American Civil War Flashcards
When did the CSA surrender to the Union?
9th April 1865 in Appomattox, Virginia
What happened to the CSA troops once the war was over?
They were sent home on parole (a promise of good behaviour). All heavy weapons were confiscated from the CSA.
How did Lincoln believe the CSA should be treated at the end of the war?
He wasn’t interested in punishing them. He wanted reconciliation and to bring them back into the Union.
What were some of the factors that led to the CSA surrendering?
Food shortages, desertion (running away) of soldiers, high levels of destruction in the South, and superior numbers in the Union forces.
Why was so much effort put into reconstructing the South after the war?
Most of the fighting had taken place in the South and the level of destruction was enormous.
Why wasn’t Lincoln able to see the return of the CSA states into the Union?
He was assassinated before the Union was fully restored again.
Who became the President of the USA after Lincoln’s assassination?
Andrew Johnson
How did slavery become illegal in the United States?
The US Constitution was amended (changed) to make slavery illegal. This is known as the 13th Amendment, which the southern states were forced to adopt. Slavery was now banned and all freed slaves became citizens. This change took place after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Why was the future uncertain for all of the slaves who had been freed as a result of the war?
Many freed slaves did not have the skills to seek employment, and many of them remained in a situation similar to slavery.
How did the government try to assist freed slaves to build a new life for themselves?
The Freedmen’s Bureau was set up to provide legal aid, food, clothing, as well as money for education and health care.
Why did members of Congress disagree about the treatment of the CSA states that were defeated?
President Johnson liked Lincoln’s idea of reconciliation. Other politicians wanted to punish the South for the rebellion.
Which laws were passed to bring the southern states back into the Union?
The Reconstruction Acts of 1867 and 1868. The South was placed under military rule while new state constitutions were written. The South was forced to accept the 13th Amendment to end slavery.
How could freedmen participate in government after the war?
They became politicians and became members of Congress (parliament).
What was the Ku Klux Klan?
A racist group of whites who were determined to keep African Americans ‘in their place’. The group tried to undermine the new freedoms awarded to African Americans after the war.
What were Jim Crow Laws?
Laws passed by southern state governments to restrict the freedoms of African Americans after the war. Obstacles were deliberately put in the way of African Americans who tried to use their new rights, e.g. the right to vote.
