A

How did slavery become illegal in the United States?

A

The US Constitution was amended (changed) to make slavery illegal. This is known as the 13th Amendment, which the southern states were forced to adopt. Slavery was now banned and all freed slaves became citizens. This change took place after the Emancipation Proclamation.

A

What was the Ku Klux Klan?

A

A racist group of whites who were determined to keep African Americans ‘in their place’. The group tried to undermine the new freedoms awarded to African Americans after the war.

A

Laws passed by southern state governments to restrict the freedoms of African Americans after the war. Obstacles were deliberately put in the way of African Americans who tried to use their new rights, e.g. the right to vote.

What is segregation?

A

Separating white Americans from African Americans. This racist policy was used in the South after the war. African Americans were forced to live in separate areas, go to separate schools etc.

A

Northerners and Southerners who tried to make money from all of the chaos in the South after the war.

Why was reconstructing the South such a difficult task?

A

The war created a lot of anger and bitterness in the South. Replacing slavery with freedom was a difficult task that took a long time to achieve. Many southern states continued to use racist policies towards African Americans.

What was the Compromise of 1877?

A

The agreement that brought all of the former CSA states back into the Union. The southern states were promised federal funding to help rebuild after the war, and the Union agreed to withdraw its troops from the South.

Why was the civil war a turning point in American history?

A

The Union had been preserved and slavery had been abolished. Even though the southern states suffered in the years after the war, American industry expanded and the USA became an industrial giant.
