What causes outwith the lungs can cause restrictive lung disease?
Skeletal, muscle weakness, abdominal obesity

Guillian Barre, Myaesthenia Gravis, Motor neurone

What is “dust disease” also known as?
Pneumoconiosis
What types of fibrogenic dust disease are there?
Fibrogenic
- Asbestosis
- Silicosis
What types of non fibrogenic dust disease are there?
Siderosis (Iron)
- Stanosis (Tin)
- Baritosis (Barium)
What are examples of autoimmune alveolitis?
SLE,Polyarteritis,Wegeners,Churg-Strauss, Bechet’s
How does alveolitis present?
-Breathless on exertion • Cough but no wheeze • Finger clubbing • Inspiratory Lung crackles • Central cyanosis (if hypoxaemic) • Pulmonary fibrosis occurs as end stage response to chronic inflammation
What happens to lung volumes in restrictive lung disease?
↓FEV1 ↓FVC normal ratio
What is the peak flow like?
normal
What are raised in sarcoidosis?
Serum ACE and Ca
What is the 1st line of treatment?
Systemic Corticosteroids- ie oral prednisolone-inhaled
corticosteroids not effective
What is the 2nd line of treatment?
oral Azathioprine , Cyclophosphamide, Mycophenolate
Cylcosporin
