What is restorative justice?
A
- when an offender meets with a victim and tries to make amends for the crime committed, helps the offender avoid further bad behaviour

What is the aim of restorative justice?
A
- make offenders realise the implications of their actions for the victim and to improve the relationship with the victim and the community by repairing the damage they’ve caused
- addresses some of the needs of the victim to improve their recovery of the crime
- can be used instead or alongside custodial sentencing

What’s the first step involved in restorative justice?
A
- seek cooperation from both the victim and the offender, won’t work if one party isn’t interested in being involved, shouldn’t cause any further trauma for the victim and they should be happy to be involved.

What happens in restorative justice sessions
A
- face to face meetings, mediation or indirect mediation set up so victim dn offender can communicate in a controlled environment.
- what happens in the meetings varies with circumstances and individuals involved
- victim able to ask any questions and to say what they want to the offender

What’s practical reparation in restorative justice programmes?
A
- offender repairs the damage they may’ve done
eg
if an offender sprayed graffiti on a wall, they can paint the wall. ensures that the community sees that the wrong against the community is rectified.
