Restoration of an Implant Flashcards
What type of implant-retained prosthesis are there?
Removable prosthesis- stud, bar (usually for an over-denture) or magnet retained.
Fixed prosthesis- single, multi unit or full arch.
- Screw-retained or cement-retained.
What do you need to make patients with a removable implant-retained prosthesis aware of?
The denture will still move- it will still have anteroposterior rock.
In basic terms, describe the provision of implant-retained bridges/
Implants placed and soft tissues healed.
Zirconia framework placed
Zirconia framework veneered in porcelain
Split into different sections- if certain areas needs adjustments or fixed, you only need to take that one aspect of it off and send that away for repair.
In basic terms, describe the provision of implant-retained crowns.
Implants placed and allowed to heal.
Provide provisional crowns to allow the gingivae to mature and heal.
Take impression of the area for definitive crowns.
Provide definitive crowns.
Why do you provide provisional crowns before providing definitive crowns?
Shapes and moulds the gingivae to an ideal position
- allows the gingivae to mature over a period of a few months and then take master impressions of this.
What are the two impression technique for an implant?
Open try or closed tray.
Describe the open tray impression concept.
Impression coping screwed into the implant and then impression taken over this
- with hole cut in the tray.
Hole allows you to unscrew the impression coping, otherwise the tray wouldn’t come off.
What are the benefits of the open tray impression technique?
Colour coded components corresponds to prosthetic connection
High precision impression
Clear-cut tactile response for accurate positioning
The coping is screwed on, so is safer.
What is the closed tray impression technique?
Impression taken without the hole in it
What are the benefits of a closed tray impression?
colour-coded components corresponds to prosthetic connection
No additional preparation of tray
High precision impression
Clear cut tactile response for accurate positioning
Disadvantages
- Easy to apply coping, It just snaps on.
What kind of implant abutments are available?
Screw retained and cement-retained.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of screw-retained implant abutments?
Advantages
- Ideal implant position for aesthetics
- More easily retrievable
- Retention is good, even if less than 4mm abutment height.
Disadvantages
- access is more difficult
- More expensive
- Occlusal interferences are possible
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a cement-retained implant?
Advantages-
- Easier access
- Less expensive
- Better occlusal control
Disadvantages
- Difficult to remove once it is cemented in place
- Excess cement can cause peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis.
- Need to have an abutment greater than 5mm to achieve adequate retention.
What can you use to assess soft tissues around an implant site?
Pink Aesthetic score
What is Pink Aesthetic score?
Looks at the soft tissues around an implant site.
- Mesial papilla
- Distal papilla
- Soft tissue level
- Soft tissue contour
- Alveolar process deficiency
- Soft tissue colour
- Soft tissue texture
