-seen by irrestistible urge to move one’s body typically the legs to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations
when do we see RLS?
more common in middle aged or older parents
seen in CKD and FE deficiency anemia pts
1st line treatment of RLS
dopaminergic agonists (ropinirole and pramipexole)
gabapentin in refractory cases
supplemental interventions for RLS is
iron supplementation if low ferritin,
leg massage
hot or cold compresses
sleep hygiene measures and regular exercise
diagnostic criteria for RLS:
unpleasant sensations in the legs, or other parts of the body (arms) that begin or worsen with inactivity lying down sitting
unpleasant sensations in the legs that:
are relieved by movement (walking, stretching)
worsen or occur only in evening or at night
symptoms not explained by other disorder
secondary causes of RLS
iron deficiency anemia uremia (ESRD, CKD) DM2 MS, Parkinsons Dx pregnancy drugs (antidepressants, metoclopramide)
alternate pharmacological treatment for RLS
alpha 2 delta calcium channel ligands - gabapentin or encarbil
