Gas pipe ruptures caused fires - the bay bridge and Cyprus express way collapsed - hundreds of buildings collapsed - liquefaction occurred in the bay district as it was built on an old landfill site (water moved up through the sediment and the ground acted more like a liquid, reducing strength and causing many wooden buildings to collapse)
