Restless Earth Flashcards
Earths structure
Crust
Mantle
Outter core
Inner core
What are the two types of crust?
- continental: thicker, less dense
* oceanic: thinner, more dense
What are the three plate margins?
- destructive
- constructive
- conservative
What happens at the destructive plate margin?
- two plates moving towards each other
* oceanic submerges under continental, destroying the mantle
What happens at a conservative plate margin?
•two plates moving sideways past each other
Or
• moving in the same direction just at different speeds
What happens at a constructive plate margin?
Two more plates moving away from each other
Where are gold mountains formed?
• two plates colliding at destructive plate margins
How are fold mountains formed?
- tectonic plates collide
* the sedimentary rocks between them are folded and forced upwards
What are gold mountains used for?
- farming
- hydroelectric power
- mining
- tourism
- forestry
How are volcanos formed?
- oceanic plate submerges into the mantle
- gets destroyed
- a pool of magma forms
- magma rises through the crack into the crust
- magma erupts to the surface forming a volcano
What are the three different types of volcanos?
- composite
- shield
- dome
Composite volcano
- made up of lava and ash
- lava is thick and flows slowly
- hardens quickly to form a steep sided volcano
Sheild volcano
- made up of lava
- lava is runny
- flows quickly, spreads widely
- forms a low flat volcano
Dome volcano
- made up of lava
- lava is thick and flows slowly
- hardens quickly
- steel sides
Characteristics of a super volcano
Flat
Covers a large area
Have a caldera
