Restless Earth Flashcards
Caldera
A large ridge forming the edge of a super volcano, where the original cone has either collapsed or been destroyed in a large eruption
Conservative plate margin
A plate margin where the tectonic plates are sliding past each other
Constructive plate margin
A plate margin where the tectonic plates are moving apart
Continental crust
The part of the Earth’s crust that makes the continents
Destructive plate margins
A plate margin where the tectonic plates collide
Epicentre
The point on the ground directly above the focus of an earthquake
Focus
The point of origin of an earthquake
Magnitude
The size of an earthquake
Oceanic crust
The part of the crust which is below the ocean
Ocean trench
A deep depression on the ocean floor formed at the subduction zone of destruction plate margins
Plates
The large pieces of broken crust that covers the Earth
Plate margin
Boundary between two tectonic plates
Prediction
Forecasting future change
Primary effects
Impacts of a natural disaster that happened immediately or soon after the event
Response
The way in which people react to a situation e.g. An earthquake
Secondary effects
The after effects of a disaster e.g. disease spreads due to dirty water, loss of economy due to destruction of businesses
Subduction
The transformation into magma of a denser tectonic plate as it dives under a less dense plate
Super volcano
A volcano capable of erupting on a much larger scale than a normal volcano
Tectonic hazards
Threats posed by earthquakes, volcanoes etc.
Tsunami
Huge waves which are caused by an earthquake under the sea
