Restless Earth Flashcards
Conservative
A plate margin where the tectonic plates are sliding past each other
Constructive plate margin
A plate margin where the tectonic plates are sliding past each other.
Continental crust
The part of the earth’s crust that makes the continents
Convection currents
Circulating movements of the magma in the mantle caused by the heat of the core
Destructive plate margin
A plate margin where the tectonic plates collide
Epicentre
The point of the ground directly above the focus(centre) of an earthquake
Focus
The point of origin of an earthquake
Magnitude
The size of an earthquake
Oceanic crust
The part of fhe earth’s crust which is below the oceans
Ocean trench
A deep conversation on the ocean floor formed at the subduction zones of destructive plate margins
Plates
The large pieces of broken crust that cover the earth
Plate margin
Boundary between the two tectonic plates
Predictions
Forecasting future changes
Primary effects
Impacts of a natural disaster that happen immediately or soon after the event
Response
The way in which people react to a situation e.g an earthquake
Second effects
The after effects of a disaster e.g disease spreads due to dirty water, loss of economy due to destruction of business
Subduction
The transformation into magma of a denser tectonic plate as it diver under a less dense plate
Supervolcano
A volcano capable of erupting on a much larger scale than a normal volcano
Tectonic plates
Threats posed by earthquakes, volcanoes etc
Tsunami
Huge waves cause by an earthquake under the sea
Caldera
A large ridge forming the edge of a supervolcano, where the original cone had either collapsed or been destroyed in a large eruption
