Restless Earth Flashcards
What is it called when all the continents are together?
Pangea
How many layers are within Earth’s interior?
Four layers
What type of boundary is this where they move apart
Constructure boundary
Why do tectonic plates move?
They move because the powerful geothermal heat from the core radiations that is causing the convention currents that move around the mantle, that moves the tectonic plates.
What boundary meets where the continental plate meets the Oceanic plate
Destructive boundary
Two plates with similar densities move together.
Collision boundary
Describe a Conservative boundary?
Where two plates do not directly collides, but slide past each other. Know as a flat (weakness) This creates earthquakes
Where the plate slides past each other
Conservative boundary
Describe a collision boundary?
Two plates with similar densities move together. This forms mountains, earthquakes are very common, but no volcanoes. Example The Himalayas. Same material making them buckle up
Describe a destructive boundary?
The oceanic plate slides under the continental plate because the C plate is denser know as the subduction zone. C plate gap forms a volcano because magma rises. For example Nazca and South America
What is it called when the convection current is in the mantle
Convection cell
What are the four layers?
Core,
Mantle,
Outer Core,
And lithosphere
How do convection currents work when moving tectonic plates
In the mantle they move around in circles for example they heat up when near the core (heat rises) so it goes up which push the tectonic plates and goes back down.
What is a Construction boundary?
Two plates move apart forming a volcano, but these volcanos don’t have strong eruptions and earthquakes.
What is the Core made out of?
Iron and nickel
What is the lithosphere?
The continental plates and the oceanic plates
How big is the outer core?
2900km
What is the asthenosphere?
The upper mantle
How big is the inner core?
6370km
How big is the mantle?
700km
Is the continental plate thick or thin?
Thick
Is the oceanic plate thick or thin?
Thin
What is the name when the North Pole and South Pole swap?
Palaeomagnetism
What is Palaeomagnetism?
Palaeomagnetism is the study of past variations in the Earth’s magnetic field as reconstructed from the rock and archaeological records.
