Restless Earth Flashcards
Name the 6 different crusts in the earth?
continental (land) crust oceanic (water) crust crust mantle outer crust inner crust ( the middle of it )
What do destructive plates do?
they move towards each other.
What do constructive plates do?
they move away from each other.
What do conservative plates do?
they slide past each other.
What is the posh word for sliding under another plate?
subducting.
what are some effects of a volcano?
optional.
Name one prediction method to measure a volcano?
seismograph
these measure the earthshaking. if it is mini-volcanoes is may mean the volcano will erupt.
measured on the Richter scale on a scale of 0 to 10.
A hotspot is:
an area of the earths crust where unusual high amounts of heat flow causing volcanic activity.
What is an earthquake?
it is a tectonic plate movement that causes the ground to shake.
What causes an earthquake?
when two plates moving past each other become stuck and the tension builds up.
This causes the crust to move and break.
Where the rock break is called the focus.
The point above the surface is called the epicentre
Shock waves are then sent in all directions.
The waves can cause a lot of damage to the earths surface.
Name one case study that involves the effects of an earthquake?
the boxing day tsunami that happened in the Indian Ocean (earthquake).
Name to countries that have been affected by a tsunami?
Thailand
Kenya
