Q

How are fold mountains formed?

A

Two tectonic plates collide. The sedimentary rocks fold and buckle and force upwards. Fold. Mountains are formed

Q

How are volcanoes formed at destructive plate boundaries?

A

Oceanic plate goes under the continental plate which cause and ocean trench. The oceanic plate moves down into the mantle and is melted and destroyed. A pool of magma is then formed. The magma erupts on to the surface (called lava) and forms a volcano

Q

How are volcanoes formed at constructive plate boundaries?

A

Magma rises up into a crack where the plates are moving apart forming a volcano

Q

What are the the characteristics of composite volcanoes?

A

Formed by alternation layers of laval and ash. Steep sides. Thick flowing lava which hardens to form the steep sides.

Q

What are the characteristics of a shield volcano?

A

Made up of only lava. The runny laval spreads quickly across a larger surface area to form a flaw low volcano.

Q

How do scientists try to predict eruptions?

A

They look for things such as tiny earthquakes, escaping gas and changes in the shape of the volcano

14
Q

How are super volcanoes formed?

A

Magma rises up through the cracks in the crust to form a magma basin below the surface. The pressure causes a circular bulge of the surface several kilometres wide. The bulge can crack creating vents for the lava to escape. This causes earthquakes and also sends up giant plumes of ash and rock.

15
Q

Which plate boundries do earthquakes occur at?

A

Destructive, constructive, and conservative.

16
Q

How is an earthquake formed at a destructive plate boundary?

A

Tension builds of when one plate gets stuck as it’s moving down past the mantle

17
Q

How do earth quakes happen at constructive plate boundaries?

A

Tension builds along cracks within the plates as they move away from each other

18
Q

How do earthquakes happen a conservative plate boundaries?

A

Tension builds up when plates are moving past each other and get stuck. When the tension is released it causes and earthquake.

19
Q

How can earhtquakes be measured?

A

Using the mercalli and richter scales.

20
Q

What type of scale is the richter scale?

A

A logarithmic scale

21
Q

What causes a Tsunami?

A

Volcanoes and earthquakes at sea.

22

A

57
