Restless Earth Flashcards
How are fold mountains formed?
Two tectonic plates collide. The sedimentary rocks fold and buckle and force upwards. Fold. Mountains are formed
What plate boundaries can fold mountains be formed?
Destructive plate boundries
Give and example of fold mountains formed by a continental and an oceanic plate colliding?
The Andes in south America
Give and example of fold mountains being formed by two continental plates colliding?
The Himalayas in Asia
What plate boundaries can volcanoes be formed at?
Constructive and destructive.
How are volcanoes formed at destructive plate boundaries?
Oceanic plate goes under the continental plate which cause and ocean trench. The oceanic plate moves down into the mantle and is melted and destroyed. A pool of magma is then formed. The magma erupts on to the surface (called lava) and forms a volcano
How are volcanoes formed at constructive plate boundaries?
Magma rises up into a crack where the plates are moving apart forming a volcano
What are hotspots?
Volcanoes that form ver parts of the mantle tht are really hot
What are the the characteristics of composite volcanoes?
Formed by alternation layers of laval and ash. Steep sides. Thick flowing lava which hardens to form the steep sides.
What are the characteristics of a shield volcano?
Made up of only lava. The runny laval spreads quickly across a larger surface area to form a flaw low volcano.
What are the characteristics of a dome volcano?
Made up of only lava, thick lava, steep sides
How do scientists try to predict eruptions?
They look for things such as tiny earthquakes, escaping gas and changes in the shape of the volcano
Give and example of a volcano at a destructive plate boundary?
The soufriere hills in Montserrat
What are super volcanoes?
Really large volcnoes
How are super volcanoes formed?
Magma rises up through the cracks in the crust to form a magma basin below the surface. The pressure causes a circular bulge of the surface several kilometres wide. The bulge can crack creating vents for the lava to escape. This causes earthquakes and also sends up giant plumes of ash and rock.
