Resting membrane potential Flashcards
1
Q
What is the resting membrane potential of a neuron?
A
-70mV (inside is more negative than the outside)
2
Q
Why is the inside of the neuron more negative?
A
- More K+ leak channels than Na+
- Large negative proteins inside
- Na+/K+ pump maintains imbalance (3 Na+ out, 2 K+ in)
3
Q
What does the sodium potassium pump do?
A
Uses ATP to pump 3 Na+ out and 2 K+ in, keeping the inside negative
