What is the metric black hole and why is it important?
The metric black hole is the hidden impact on a company’s bottom line brought on by fragmented work like email. It is important because it is the reason why deep work is becoming less and less practiced. Because firms are unable to see the impact of their shallow work practices, they will not practice deep work.
What does the principle of Least Resistance claim?
In a business setting without clear feedback on the impact of various behaviors to the bottom line, we will tend toward behaviors that are easiest in the moment.
What does the term Busyness as Proxy for Productivity mean?
In the absence of clear indicators of what it means to be productive and valuable in their jobs, many knowledge workers turn back toward an industrial indicator of productivity, doing lots of stuff in a visible manner
