begins with the decision to have surgery and ends when the patient is wheeled into surgery.
Preoperative Phase
called the initial stage
involves the surgery itself. It starts when the patient is wheeled into the surgical suite and ends when the patient is wheeled to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU)
Intraoperative Phase
final phase, known as the postoperative phase, is the period immediately following surgery
Postoperative Phase
DUTIES OF THE SCRUB NURSE
Don OR attire and PPE.
2. Gather necessary equipment and
supplies.
3. Create and maintain a sterile field.
4. Scrub and don sterile gloves and gown.
5. Organize the sterile field for use.
6. Count necessary items.
7. Assist team members during entry of the
sterile field
Intraoperative Case Management
1.Maintain the sterile field .
2. Pass instrumentation, equipment and supplies, to the surgeon and surgical assistants as needed.
3. Assess and anticipate the needs of the patient
and surgeon and provide the necessary items in order of need.
4. Medication preparation and handling
5. Count necessary items
6. Specimen care
7. Dressing application
Post-operative Case Management
- Maintenance of the sterile field until the patient is transported.
- Removal of used instruments, equipment and supplies from the OR.
- Care and maintenance of instruments, equipment and supplies following use.
- Preparation of the OR for the next patient.
DUTIES OF THE CIRCULATING NURSE
Duties are performed outside the sterile field.
