Responses to Stimuli: Tropism Flashcards
what is a tropism?
a tropism is the growth of part of a plant in response to a directional stimulus
what is a positive response?
the plant grows towards the stimulus
what is a negative response?
the plant grows away from the stimulus
what is phototropism?
the tropism of a light stimulus
what is gravitropism?
the tropism of a gravity stimulus
what is hydrotropism?
the tropism of a water stimulus
which direction do plant shoots grow with a light stimulus?
shoots grow towards the light (positive phototropism)
which direction do plant shoots grow with a gravity stimulus?
shoots grow away from gravity (negative gravitropism)
how does the tropism conditions of shoots benefit them?
so their leaves are in the most favourable condition to capture light for photosynthesis
which direction do plant roots grow with a light stimulus?
roots grow away from the light (negative phototropism)
which direction do plant roots grow with a gravity stimulus?
roots grow towards gravity (positive gravitropism)
how does the tropism conditions of roots benefit them?
the response increases the probability that roots will grow into the soil, so they can absorb water and mineral ions better
