Responses in Plants Flashcards
Why do plants respond to changes in their environment?
To increase their chance of survival.
Why do plants need to sense gravity?
So their roots and shoots grow in the right direction.
Why do climbing plants have a sense of touch?
So they can find things to climb and reach the sunlight.
Do plants respond to the presence of predators? Explain.
Yes, they need to avoid being eaten.
Give an example of how a plant responds to a predator.
White clover can produce substances that are toxic to cattle.
What are auxins?
Auxins are plant hormones that control growth at the tips of shoots and roots.
How do auxins move through the plant?
Auxins move through plants in a solution (dissolved in water).
Where is auxin produced?
In the tips of plants.
How do auxins move from the tips of plants?
Auxins diffuse backwards to stimulate the cell elongation process.
Where does the cell elongation process take place?
The cell elongation process takes place just behind the tip of a plant.
What is the effect of auxins?
Auxins promote growth in the shoot, but inhibits growth in the root.
A shoot is called positively phototropic, what does this mean?
The shoot will grow toward the light.
What is abiotic stress?
When plants respond to anything that’s harmful, but natural such as drought, extreme cold
Give an example of abiotic stress.
Carrots produce antifreeze proteins at low temperatures. The proteins bind to ice crystals and lower the temperature that water freezes at which prevents more ice crystals from growing.
