A student says “I can’t do this”. What is your response?
I know you can do it, but you might just need a little help first!
A student says “Fuck this, I hate it, it’s stupid”. What is your response?
Learning a new thing can be difficult
A student says “They’re stupid”. What is your response?
They are trying to work it out and that requires high intelligence and bravery
A student is generally angry and volatile, but they have not yet committed any offenses. What do you do?
Quiet word: You are clever and brave but angry at the moment. You need to take a break and get a drink.
A student runs away from class.
Mark as Truant in Sentral.
Whole class interrupting or unruly (during instruction)
- Wait and praise those who are listening.
- Minutes on board (to inform regular teacher of wasted time), erase if working well.
- At 10 minutes, if no improvement, call for HT.
Whole class chatting or off-task (during work time)
- Model and scaffold product on board
- Roam room and provide assistance and encouragement
- Praise those working well
- Progress reports
Physical assault or a fight occurs.
- Send student for HT or Exec
- Attempt to dissolve situation and separate students
- Attend to any injured student/s
- Inform HT of events and fill out incident report
Not putting phone away
- Say, “If your phone found its way back into your hand, please put it away again.” and then wait.
- If constant, or impacting work, say “If you choose to not do the work, that’s fine, but I will let your teacher know exactly who has and hasn’t worked today.”
o Note: (Student) refused to stop using their device inappropriately.
Multiple students leave class early
- Play games right until bell time
2. If students properly leave, take down names and mark as truanting
Refusal to move seats.
“A warning was given and your behaviour continued, so this is the consequence. Now you have the choice to move or refuse my instruction. Before you make that choice I’m going to give you 2 minutes to think about it. If after 2 minutes, if you’re still sitting here, then I’m going to let (your teacher) know that you refused my instruction and let them decide on an appropriate consequence.”
Student/s makes racist or homophobic comments which may be directed explicitly at another student.
Minor offense:
- Inform perpetrating student/s that comments are highly inappropriate and that behaviour will not be tolerated at school.
- Privately ask student/s to talk outside or ask to stay back at end.
- “What did you do/say that was inappropriate?”
- “How might that comment make other students feel”
- “Everyone in this school deserves to be treated with kindness and respect” - Check in with affected student.
- “Are you ok?”
- “I’m so sorry that that occurred in my class. Please know that the school is going to support you and make sure this does not occur again.” - Inform HT of event and create Sentral entry.
If Major offense, call immediately for HT or Exec and provide affected student with immediate support.
Majority of class makes racist or homophobic comments which may be directed explicitly at another student.
- Inform students that comments are highly inappropriate and that behaviour must stop immediately.
- Privately ask affected student to talk outside.
- “Are you ok?”
- “I’m so sorry that that occurred in my class. Please know that the school is going to support you and make sure this does not occur again.” - In last 5 minutes of lesson, allow affected student to leave early and have discussion with rest of class.
- “What did you do/say that was inappropriate?”
- “How might that comment make other students feel”
- “Everyone in this school deserves to be treated with kindness and respect” - Inform HT of event and make Sentral entry.
Most of class runs away (such as in a PE prac lesson)
- Use whistle to call students back to designated area, following students until inappropriate. Inform groups of students that if they refuse to come back they will be sent to the DP.
- Write message to HT or exec informing them of situation, using other students to help identify which students are truanting.
