Response to infection Flashcards
What is released in sweat that causes bacterial death?
Fatty acids
Where are mast cells located?
Connective tissue and mucous membranes
What do mast cells do?
Dilate blood vessels, induce inflammation through release of histamines and heparin, recruits macrophages and neutrophils
What do NK cells do? Where are they located?
Kill tumour cells and virally infected cells
Circulate in blood
Where are dendritic cells located?
Epithelial tissue (eg skin, lung, GI tract)
What are monocytes, where are they found?
Differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells in response to inflammation, stored in spleen
What do basophils do?
Defence against parasites, release histamines
What do eosionphils do?
Release toxins that kill bacteria and parasites
Cause tissue damage!
What does C3a, C3b, C5a, C5b-9 complements do?
C3a: Inflammation
C3b: Opsonization and phagocytosis
C5a: Inflammation
C5b-9: Lysis of microbe
What is part of the innate system?
Epithelial barriers, phagocytes, complement system, NK cells
How do innate cells recognise pathogens? What do they use?
PAMPs, Pattern recognition receptors
