Respitory System Flashcards
Mouth
Gases enter the body
Nose
Moistens
Warms
Filters air
Pharynx
muscular tube branching to trachea and esophagus
Passage for air and food
Larynx
Voice box
Small cartilage
Trachea
Strong bone connecting larynx to lungs
Rings of cartilage
Bronchi / bronchioles
Directs air from trachea to alveoli
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs of gas exchange
Ribs and intercostal muscles
Curved bones with muscle in between protecting lungs
Diaphragm
Big dome shaped muscle
Separating thoracic cavity from abdominal cavity
Pleura
Two layers of tissues separated by fluid
Prevents friction of lungs expanding
Respiration
Diaphragm contracts and moves down
Intercostal muscles contract moving ribs out and up
Thoracic cavity enlarges and air pressure decreases
Air rushes into lungs
Inspiration
Diaphragm returns to curved position
Intercostal muscles relax moving ribs in and down
Thoracic cavity decreases in size and air pressure increases
Air rushes out of lungs
