Respiratory Volumes Flashcards
Respiratory Volume
Amount of air moved in and out of the lungs
Tidal Volume
the amount of air that normally enters the lung during quiet breathing, about 500 ml
Expiratory reserve volume
the amount of air that can be forcefully exhaled past a normal tidal expiration, up to 1200 for men
Inspiratory reserve volume
the amount of air that can be forcefully inhaled past a normal tidal inspriration
Total Lung Capacity
Sum of all lung volumes (TV+ERV+IRV+RV) the total amount of air a person can hold in the lungs after forceful inhalaltion
Vital Capacity
sum of (TC+ERV+IRV); the amount of air a person can move in and out of the lungs
Inspiratory capacity
Sum of (TV+IRV) the maximum amount of air that can be inhaled past a normal tidal expiration
Functional residual capacity
Sum of (ERV+RV) the amount of air that remains in the lungs after a normal tidal expiration
