Diaphragmatic breathing
Take a deep breath from the diaphragm
Lie on back with knees bent
Rest a hand over the abdomen to create resistance
If the client’s hand rises and lowers upon inhalation/exhalation the breathing is being performed correctly
Pursed Lip Breathing
Form mouth as if trying to whistle
In through the nose
Out through the mouth
Deep, slow breaths
Do not puff cheeks

Deep breathing, use supplemental oxygen as prescribed
Stay with client
Encourage airway clearance through coughing
oral/oropharyngeal suctioning
Use of spacer devices
Purpose: keeps the medication in the device longer, thereby delivering more medication to the lungs.
- Remove covers from the mouthpiece of the inhaler and the spacer
- Insert the spacer into the MDI
- Shake the inhaler 5-6 times
- Exhale completely, close the mouth around the spacer. Continue with use of a MDI.
Use of an inhaler
- Remove the cap of the inhaler (apply a spacer and continue steps)
- Shake the inhaler 5-6 times
- Exhale completely
- Tilt head back, put teeth on mouthpiece, close mouth, press down while slow inhalation (3-5 seconds)
- Keep medication in mouth for 3-10 seconds
- Exhale through pursed lip breathing
