Respiratory System: Primary Muscles of Inhalation Flashcards
2 Primary Inhalation muscles:
Diaphragm
External Intercostals
Diaphragm
Dome-shape floor of Thoracic cavity and ceiling of abdominal viscera
unpaired
Linked to lungs via parietal membrane
Diaphragm Attachments
Sternum
Lower ribs
Lumbar Vertebrae
Central Tendon (Diaphragmatic Aponeurosis)
Passageways of Diaphragm
Aortic Hiatus
Esophageal Hiatus
Foramen Vena Cava
Aortic Hiatus
Passageway for the Aorta (Major blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood from heart)
Esophageal Hiatus
Passageway for Esophagus
Foremen Vena Cava
Hollow Vein
Major vein returning to heart with deoxygenated blood
Diaphragm Function
Vertical expansion of TC
When Diaphragm contracts, flattens and pushes down on the abdominal viscera
Abdominal wall expands/rises, TC has more vertical volume
(also transverse and anteroposterior expansion)
External intercostals Attachments
Lower border of one rib to the upper boarder of rib below
Fills space between all 12 ribs except for the anterior space (costal cartilage)
External intercostals functions
Can be activated individually or all at once
Raises rib cage up
Results in transverse/anteroposterior expansion
