respiratory system grade 9 Flashcards
what is the respiratory system responsible for:
supplying oxygen to the body
removing carbon dioxide
gaseous exchange
exchange of gases between blood , lungs and body cells
breathing
the flow of air in and out of lungs
function of respiratory system
supplying oxygen
removing carbon dioxide
respiration needs oxygen to take place and carbon dioxide is given off
oxygen needs to reach the cells and carbon dioxide is taken away from cells
main components of the respiratory system (naomi taljaard bakes muffins late)
nose mouth trachea and other passage ways lungs blood
alveoli
air sacs where gaseous exchange takes place
diffusion in the respiratory system
movement of molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration
main processes of respiratory system
baby girl respond
breathing
gaseous exchange
respiration
two processes of breathing
inhalation and exhalation
exhalation
diaphragm relax and air containing carbon dioxide is forced out the lungs. diaphragm moves upwards intercostal muscles relax chest wall and rib cage contract volume of air decreases air pressure increases higher than atmospheric pressure
inhalation
diaphragm contracts and air containing oxygen flows down the trachea into the lungs diaphragm moves downwards intercostal muscles contract chest wall and rib cage expand volume of air increases air pressure decreases lower than atmospheric pressure
respiration (+what’s released)
chemical reaction using oxygen to convert glucose into energy
carbon dioxide, water and energy are released
where does respiration occur
mitochondria of all body cells
word equation for respiratory
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
where does gaseous occur
lungs
body cells
