respiratory system Flashcards
what is the respiratory system
a series of organs that control gas exchange as we breathe ie take in oxygen and change carbon dioxide
what is the order of inhalation in the system
1) breathe in 2) rib cage expands as rib muscles contract 3) diaphram contracts ( moves down)
what is the order of exhalation
1) breath out 2) rib cage gets smalles as rib muscles relax 3) diaphram relaxes and moves up
what is a trachea where is it
the trachea is a pipe down our throat in which oxygen goes through. it then branches off into 2 bronchi
what is the role of bronchi ?
bronchi are the main passageways into the lungs. the become tiny air sacs called aveoli. this is where gas exhange between carbon dioxide and oxygen take place
what is diffusion
diffusion is the movement of one area of gas from a high concentration to an area of low concentration
where does diffusion take place
there is a high concentration of oxygen in the alveoli and a low concentraion of oxygen in the blood so oxygen diffuses from the al;veoli into the blood
what is haemoglobin
haemoglobin is a blood which contains oxygen to be exchanged at the working muscle and carbon to be exchanged at the lung
what is the equation to measure the efficiency of the respiratory system
tidal volume(TV) ( the amount of air breathed in or out in a normal breath) x breath frequency (F) ( no of breathes taken in one minute ) = minuite ventiation (VE)
