Respiratory System Flashcards
Cellular respiratory is
a process that involves breaking down glucose so that energy is released in a form that your cells can use. This reaction produces carbon dioxide as a waste product that needs to be removed.
What is the equation?
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is the respiratory system?
It involves the lungs and associated structures, which take in air and supply the blood with oxygen to deliver to the body’s cells so they can carry out their essential functions;
it also performs gas exchange to remove the waste gas carbon dioxide
The respiratory system is made up of
trachea (or windpipe) and lungs
Trachea is
narrow tube from the mouth to the lungs through which air moves
Bronchi are
the narrow tubes through which air passes from the trachea to the smaller bronchioles and alveoli in the respiratory system
Bronchioles are
small branching tubes in the lungs leading from the two larger bronchi to the alveoli
Alveoli are
tiny air sacs in the lungs at the ends of the narrowest tubes. Oxygen moves from alveoli into the surrounding blood vessels, in exchange for carbon dioxide.
It is at the alveoli that gases (such as oxygen and carbon dioxide) are exchanged between the respiratory system and the circulatory system.
What is asthma?
The narrowing of the air pipes that join the mouth and nose to the lungs
Which pipes are the most affected?
The bronchi. They become narrower as:
- the muscle wall of the air pipes contracts
- the lining of the air pipes swells
- too much mucus is produced.
What are the chemicals in cigarettes?
Carcinogens, and they cause lung cancer
Examples include acetone, cyanide, methanol, arsenic and vinyl chloride
