On the lungs is to increase the rate and depth of breathing.
This provides more oxygen to blood.

as BLOOD goes past an ALVEOLUS, the BLOOD gives up CARBON DIOXIDE and picks up OXYGEN. These gases move in and out by diffusion through the alveolar walls.
