Respiratory System Flashcards
Aerobic
with oxygen
Anaerobic
without oxygen
Animals need oxygen
Aerobic Cellular Respiration
As body size increases..
Surface area to volume ratio decreases, therefore large animals don’t have the surface area for the sufficient gas exchange
Animals evolved several methods of aquiring this needed oxygen such as..
aquatic- gills
terrestrial- lungs
When you inhale..
- Diaphragm goes down
- Volume goes up
- Pressure goes down
When you exhale..
- Diaphragm goes up
- Volume goes down
- Pressure goes up
Diaphragm
- muscular wall which aids breathing
- Located at the base of rib cage
- Separates abdominal and thoracic cavities
Trachea
- Windpipe
- Air tube which connects pharynx to bronchus
Bronchus
Air tube which divides and goes to each lung
Bronchioles
Smaller branches of bronchus carry air to alveoli
Alveolus
- Tiny air sacs
- Site of gas exchange in lungs
- Millions of alveoli per lung
Respiration
Exchange of gases between air and cells, via the blood
External Respiration
- in lungs
- Exchange of gases between air and blood in the lungs
Internal Respiration
Exchange of gases between blood and cells throughout the body
