Respiratory system Flashcards
Passage of air
Nose -> Nasal cavaity->Laryx->Bronchi->Bronchioles ->alveloi
Efficiency of gas exchange
- Good lung ventilation
- Moist lining
- High amount of red blood cells and myoglobin
- Constant blood flow
- Short diffusion distances
Inspiration
Ribs move up and outwards. Diaphragm contracts and pulled flat. Pressure decreases. Thoracic cavity volume increase. External Intercostal muscles contract.
Muscles used in inspiration during exercise
Diaphragm, external intercostals, sternocleiodmastoid, scalenes, pectoralis minor
Expiration
Ribcage falls, diaphragm relaxes, returns to dome shape. Thoracic cavity volume decreases and pressure increases. Passive diagram and external intercostals relax.
Muscles used during exercise for expiration
Internal intercostals, abdominals
Tidal volume
500ml at rest. It is the volume of air breathed in or out per breath. It increased during exercise
