respiratory system Flashcards
what are the components of air?
air is made out of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.03% carbon dioxide, and the rest are rare gasses. (CROWN)
what is oxygen used for?
oxygen is essential for all living things so that they can carry out life processes
what is carbon dioxide used for?
carbon dioxide is given out when living things carry out their life processes
what are the main differences between breathing and respiration?
Breathing is taking in and giving out air. Respiration is the reaction of cells when oxygen and nutrients are used to produce carbon dioxide and energy.
what does inhaled air contain?
inhaled air contains:
- less carbon dioxide
- more oxygen
- less water vapour
- less heat
what does exhaled air contain?
exhaled air contains:
- more carbon dioxide
- less oxygen
- more water vapour
- more heat
how do fish exchange gasses?
- take in oxygen through their gills
- water containing dissolved oxygen enters the mouth of the fish. it washes over the gills and enters the blood in the gills
- as water flows out of the gills, carbon dioxide from the blood is carried away.
