Respiratory system Flashcards
nasal cavity
warms and adds some moisture to the air; traps dust so it can’t enter the lungs
pharynx
separates food and air and deliver it to esophagus and trachea
Epiglottis
flap covers the trachea during swallowing; prevents food from entering the lungs
larynx
contains vocal cords to create the sound
trachea
the tube that directs air to the lungs; rings of cartilage keep it open all the time
bronchus
the tube that splits off from the trachea to direct the air into one lung
bronchiole
a small tube in the lung that directs air to the alveoli
alveoli
tiny air spaces in the lung, deliver oxygen inside and carbon dioxide outside
lung
fills with air during inhalation and pushes it out during exhalation
diaphragm
contracts to cause inhalation and relaxes to cause exhalation
