Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the 4 major functions of the respiratory system?
- Delivers oxygen from the atmosphere to the lungs
- Gaseous exchange
- Create speech
Facilitates sense of smell
What are the three sections of the respiratory system?
- Air passages
- Lungs
- Diaphragm
What is gaseous exchange?
Occurs within the lungs- diffuses oxygen to enter and carbon dioxide to leave the blood and remove carbon dioxide from lungs and into the atmosphere
What is the passage of air?
Nasal cavity –> Pharynx –> Larynx (voice box) –> Trachea –> Bronchi –> Bronchioles –> Alveoli
What are the bronchi?
Two branches are a passageway for air to pass through, it divides into smaller branches, bronchioles
Where does gaseous exchange occur?
In the alveoli
What is the alveoli
Tiny air sacs, resemble a bunch of grapes.
What are two thing that allow quick and efficient gas exchange in the alveoli?
Walls thin and and surrounded by a network of capillaries
What is the diaphragm?
A dome shaped and involuntary smooth muscle
What are the two movements in breathing?
Inspiration and expiration
