Respiratory Physical Fundamentals Flashcards
What are the States of Matter
Gas, Liquids, Solids, Plasma
Solid Characteristics
Internal order, Limited Motion, Van Der Waal Forces
Liquid Characteristics
Capable of Flow, Mutual Attraction, Take-on-shape of Container, Not easily compressed
Gas Characteristics
Weak Attractive Forces, Capable of Flow, Easily Compressed, No Boundaries
Internal Energy of Matter
Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy
Are Temperature and Kinetic Energy related?
Yes they are propotional
What is the 1st Law of Thermodynamics?
Energy can neither be created or destroyed only transformed in Nature. A substance must gain exactly equal the energy lost by its surroundings. Based on this law, you can increase the internal energy of an objectby heating or preforming work on it.
What are the four forms of heat transfer?
Conduction, Convection, Radiation, Vaporization.
What is Conduction?
A direct contact form of heat that is the primary method for solids.
What is Convection?
Heat carried by currents from the original location to another location. Fluid and Gas use this form primarly.
What is Radiation?
When electromagnetic waves travel though space and come in contact with an object. Is not direct contact. Used to keep newborns warm.
What is Vaporization??
This occurs when liquid changes to a gas using the heat from the surrondings.
What is Condensation?
This occurs when Gas changes to a liquid and gives back heat to the surroundings..
What is temperature?
The measure of average kinetic energy in a substance.
What is Temperature measured in?
Kelvin, Celsius, Fahrenheit.
What is degrees Kelvin?
it is an international system of units (UI). Based on molecular motion & The triple point definition of water ≅ 273 K (0.0 C). Absolute Zero is where there is no kinetic energy present 0 K and impossible to achieve.
What is Celcsius?
Scale based on the metric system used with MTF.
Normal Celcsius levels.
Absolute 0= -273C. Freezing=0C, Boiling= 100C. and Human Body Temp= 37C
What is Fahrenheit?
A British system of measurement commonly used in America.
Normal Fahrenheit levels?
Absolute 0=-460F. Freezing= 32F. Boiling=212F. And Human Body Temp=98.6F.
What formula do you use to convert Celsius to Kelvin and reverse it back?
K=C+273
C=K-273
What formulas can convert Celcsius to Fahrenhite?
F= [(9/5) x C) +32
F= (Cx1.8) +32
What Formulas convert Fahrenhite to Celcsius?
C= (9/5)(F-32)
C= (F-32)/1.8
What is Melting Point?
What is Freezing Point?
What is Latent Energy?
How do you find the Pressure of LIquids?
P^L=H x Dw
Pressure = height times densityweight
What is equal to 1 atmospheric pressure?
760mmHg, 14.7 lb/in^2, 1034 g/cm^2
Pacal’s Principle
A given liquids pressure is the same at any specific depth regardless of shape.
What is Archimedes’ Principle
(Bouyancy) B=D^w x V
Liquids exert a bouyant force becasue the pressure below the submerged object always exceeds the pressure above.
Do gases exhibit bouyancy
Yes, it helps keeps solid particles suspend in gases (aerosols)
Whatis Viscocity
how well gas or liquids flow. Inversely related to temperature.
What is Cohesion
the attractive force of molecules between like molecules (Convex shape)
What is Adhesion
the attractive force of molecules between unlike molecules (concave shape)
What is Surface Tension
force exerted by like molecules at the liquids surface. Inversly affected by temperaturn.
Capillary Action
when a fluid in a small tube moves against gravity.
