Laryngotracheobronchitis
A
AKA: Croup
-Viral inflammation of upper & lower airway
Age: 6mo-3yrs
Sex: 2:1 M:F
Sx: prodrome of mild URI (coryza [swelling of nasal mucosa], nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, low-grade fever). Developing further get hoarse voice and seal bark-like cough with Respiratory stridor at night.
PE: pt. may be in distress with difficulty breathing.
Mild cases -may have expiratory wheezing,
Severe cases- inspiratory stridor w/nasal flaring, lethargy or agitation from hypoxemia, tachypnea, tachycardia, fever, lethargy, pallor.
Labs: leukocytosis w/left shift. “Steeple sign” on x-ray.
DDx: *other causes of SOB/stridor
