Medication, usage, mode of action, and side effect
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
H1 receptor antagonist (antihistamine)
USE: vertigo/motion sickness, Parkinson’s disease, insomnia, urticaria, and other skin rashes.
MOA: anticholinergic effect (dry membranes), prevention of histamine.
S/E: dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, bitter taste, urinary retention, thickening of secretion, nausea and vomiting, paradoxical excitation, and respiratory depression with first generation.
Fluticasone
Intranasal corticosteroid
USE: common cold, viral infection of the upper respiratory tract.
MOA: decrease secretion of inflammatory mediator, edema and cause vasoconstriction. No immediate benefit takes 1 to 3 weeks.
S/E: nasal drying, burning or epistaxis.
