Respiratory Histology Flashcards
what is the upper respiratory tract?
nasal cavity to pharynx
what is the lower respiratory tract
larynx to alveoli
what are the 4 main layers in the walls of the conducting areas of the resp tract
- Respiratory mucosa = the epithelium and underlying lamina propria
- Submucosa (contains mucous glands needed to moisten air)
- Cartilage and or muscle layer
- Adventitia- outermost connective tissue holding the structure together
what is the classification of the respiratory mucosa?
ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium
what are the distinguishing features of the olfactory epithelium?
bipolar neurons (which can be regenerated by basal cells)
serous glands (no goblet cells)
supporting columnar cells
classified as pseudostratified columnar epithelium
what is unique about the larynx histology ?
true cord and upper epiglottis - non keratinised stratified epithelium is present
to protect against abrasion and turbulent flow of air
