• Type 1 Hypoxia PaO2 ≤8kPa on air or O2 with normal or low PaCO2 (i.e. mainly ventilation–perfusion mismatch).
• Type 2 Hypoxia PaO2 ≤8kPa on air or O2 with raised PaCO2 (>6kPa) (i.e. predominantly alveolar hypoventilation).
