Dyspnea
Shortness of breath; difficulty breathing
Where does air get filtered, warmed, and humidified?
The mouth and nose
What returns to an upright position during normal breathing?
Epiglottis
What is respiration?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
How does are reach the lower airways?
Air travels through trachea into left and right bronchus, then into the bronchioles and finally into the alveoli sacs
What controls breathing?
Brainstem by sensing levels of CO2 in the arterial blood
Signs of normal breathing
Normal Rate: (A: 12-20 breaths/min, C: 15-30 breaths/min, I: 30-60 breaths/min)
Regular pattern of inhalation and exhalation
Clear and equal breath sounds on both sides of chest
Regular and equal chest rise and fall
Adequate depth (Tidal volume)
Unlabored; without adventitious (abnormal) breath sounds
