closure or collapse of alveoli
most common after surgery (lungs not being inflated enough)
insidious - Tachypnea, dyspnea, hypoxemia ; also pleural pain, central cyanosis if large area of lung is affected

Increased WOB
Decreased breath sounds and crackles
CXR will show before symptoms appear
Pulse Ox may show < 90%

Frequent turning
Early mobilization
Expansion of lungs - incentive spirometer, deep breathing
Secretion management
