Respiratory Flashcards
What is diffusion?
High concentration to low concentration
What is bulk flow?
Movement of flow due to a pressure gradient
Where are chemoreceptors located in the heart?
Next to baroreceptors in carotid and aortic bodies
Where do chemoreceptors in the heart send signals to?
Cardiovascular centre in the medulla
What do the chemoreceptors in the heart detect?
Hypoxia, high CO2 and high acidosis
Which lung has 3 lobes?
Right
What does the epiglottis cover?
Trachea- stops inspiration of food/water
Where is the division for upper and lower respiratory tracts?
Vocal chords
What are the pleura called?
Visceral- directly on the lung and parietal- other side of the pleural space
What muscles contract in inspiration?
External intercostal muscles and diaphragm
What is boyles law?
Inverse relationship between volume and pressure
What is alveolar diffusion?
Oxygen dissolves in water film
Diffuses across alveolar epithelium, epithelial basement membrane, capillary basement membrane and capillary endothelium- all one cell thick
How many binding sites does a red blood cell have?
4
What is ficks law?
Net flux= -D.A. (🔺P/ x)
Rate of gas diffusion is directly proportional to:
1)Difference in partial pressure of gas in alveoli and capillary blood
2) difference in surface area of the membrane
