Respiratory Flashcards
State Boyle’s Law
Pressure is inversely proportional to volume
State Charles’ Law
Pressure is directly proportional to temperature
State the universal gas law
Pressure x Volume = Gas Constant x Temperature (Kelvin)
What is partial pressure of a gas?
The pressure exerted by a single gas in a mixture of gases
Define vapour pressure
The pressure of water in vapour form in a gas
Define saturated vapour pressure
When rate of gases entering and leaving water at the same time is equal. Sets up an equilibrium.
What is gas tension?
How readily a gas will leave a liquid it is dissolved in. At equilibrium/in the body, tension is equal to partial pressure of the gas.
What is the equation used to calculate how much gas is in a liquid?
Content = solubility of gas x tension
how easily gas dissolves x how readily it will leave
What two components must be considered to calculate how much gas is in blood?
Gas dissolved in plasma and gas bound to heamoglobin
